An art -expedition to Baikal and Buryatiya
From 13th July till 7th of August, 2009

This summer The Body Navigation Festival team (Saint-Petersburg, Russia) has decided to move with an art-expedition deep into Siberia, to explore the magnificent Baikal Lake and Asian Buryatya, to collect inspiration, memories, desires, hidden stories, nomad’s dreams and shaman’s trips. As navigators in search for new artistic raw materials,
we are inviting open-minded, courageous people and artists from different art fields, who would like to discover new places and to share space, time, soul and ideas during the expedition with each other, nature and local people!!

Among our experiences and activities during the artistic expedition there will be Trans-Siberian road, laboratories, herbal tea and bliny, workshops, improvisation, yoga practice & meditation, Tibet medicine, site-specific performances, fire, dance on the grass and rocks, jam, Russian banya and Siberian sauna, visits to Buddhist monasteries, soviet museums, listening to ethnic music and throat singing, talks with the locals, swimming in the lake and thermal water, boat trip and sleeping in yurts, walking and climbing, soup made of Baikal fish and newly drawn milk. The plan of daytime activities will also be modified according to the group interests and wishes.

We will be guided by experienced guides from Baikal region. Also we will have facilitators from the Baikal region, Buryatiya , who are specialist on traditional Siberian and Tibet medicine, body work, throat singing and shamanistic rituals.

We wish that during this expedition the participants perceive the worth of the trip and local knowledge and see it as an inspiration and potential for their work. Experience, collected materials and the documentary can be transformed into artistic work/project/concept and could be presented at the program of The Body Navigation Festival in October 2009 in St.-Petersburg. The artists will be given chance to navigate their inspiration/exploration through Russian taiga and steppe, deep forest and mountains, Buddhists’ Buryatiya, the biggest lake in the world and hidden places of Siberia, to challenge themselves and each other on the way between traditional and contemporary art and culture. However, a trip of adventure is in a way risky, and this kind of collaboration requires courage and will to try something new for all of us - the organizers of the project, and the participants.

From 13th July till 7th of August we will travel on Trans-Siberian train (or you can fly to the first stop – Irkutsk) over a dramatic and variegated route that offers limitless opportunities to meet diverse local people – Kazakh, Mongol, Buryat, Russian. Experience the waved green hills and nomadic traditions of Mongolia, Siberia's UNESCO-listed Lake Baikal and endless taiga forest on our way to the booming capitals, Moscow and St.-Petersburg. The tour is made for those who want to get a
full impression of Lake Baikal: during this tour you won`t miss the opportunity to explore many sites (we would like to avoid the touristy sites), moreover, you`ll enjoy a cruise across Baikal from the very south to the northernmost point, from west to east. This trip allows you to see and enjoy the unique world of wild and unspoilt nature of the Barguzinsky Nature Reserve and the unique landscapes of Pribaikalsky and Zabaikalsky National Parks. We will discover the sacral center of Lake Baikal - Olkhon Island - and visit Siberian cities Irkutsk and the Buddhist center of Russia- Ulan-Ude. Also during this trip we are planning to participate in the ethno-festival “Zhivaya voda” in Altai.

Organizers team: Ludcia Khabibulina, Olga Ivanskaya, Pavel Didorenko and Olga Aromy
